Government plans to improve minimum wage compliance

The government have announced a series of measures aimed at improving  compliance with the national minimum wage (NMW) and the new national living wage (NLW) when it is implemented next year.

A new team will be established within HMRC, who are responsible for compliance, along with a new Director of Labour Market Enforcement.  The enforcement budget will also be increased.  HMRC have stated that they consider that the present ‘high risk’ sectors for non-compliance are retail, hairdressing and social care.

Other measures include a doubling of the penalties for non-payment of NMW and a new penalty for company directors meaning that they could be disqualified as a director for up to 15 years for non-payment of the NMW.
